Once demanding adventure in the life of young people is the search for education. Its demand has many rewards and moments of disappointment. Its demand has many rewards and moments of disappointment.

Students expect to get good grades when they have put enough effort in their studies. When results are contrary to their expectations, many of them get discouraged, and some even give up. This is because they are attached to the fruits of their labour. Gandhi's advice is that we need to be detached from such fruits. Then, we shall draw satisfaction from the fact that we have done our best, because that is the only thing we are in control of.

We are never in control of the fruits of our labour. We are never in control of the results of what we do. However we are always in control of the effort w put in what we do. None of us has an excuse for not trying, and experience has proved that in the long run "Jembe halimtupi mkulima", as the Swahili say meaning that "a hoe never lets down a farmer".

Student who try and fail must try again. Even if they fail the second, third and fourth time, they must try again and again. The fruits of momentary effort may not meet the occasional standards. However the fruits of cumulative effort have been in favour of those who never tire of trying. As the saying goes, full effort is full victory. Don't care what happens later as long as you have tried. Unfortunately, some students don't try enough and still expect fruits. We always reap what we sow.

A final consolation is that, God has plans for each one of us. He is the one in charge of the fruits of our labour in accordance with the plans he has for us. He always expect us to do our best and leave the rest to him. That is the main advice i give to students of Loyola today. Do your best and God will do the rest!
